First Steps to the Early Childhood Education Profession

90 Hour Non-Credit Introductory Course.

This course introduces participants to basic concepts needed to work as an non qualified Daycare Educator in the field of Early Childhood Education (0-5 years). The course includes a CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) component as well as some elements of the Educational Approach and Safety and Security of Children competencies applied in the field. The participants who have completed the training will be able to continue further (if needed) with the full scope of studies on their path to become a Qualified Daycare Educator.

Topics covered:
- Understanding the profession ( 6h)
- Health, wellbeing and safety in a childcare center (33h)
- Understanding educational programming and approaches (31h)
- Child welfare and prevention

The course is designed for participants without any prior experience in the field of Early Childhood Education. It is an initiation “first steps” to starting a job within a daycare centre. The course may be useful to individuals who have worked in entry-level positions (restaurant, supermarket, etc.) and who may want to change fields.

As a result, individuals taking this course will have a better understanding of the working environment within a daycare centre and expectations within the profession. They will be introduced to daily tasks and activities in the workplace and understand new skills needed to becoming a early childhood educator.

The government of Quebec has created this measure to overcome the growing labour shortage in his field. If you are creative, energetic and friendly, and enjoy teaching young children or are interested in learning more about the field; this course is for you. All are welcome
